Table Mountain Hiking & Running Tours EST. 1995
Lion's Head Sunrise Hike
A combination of rough terrain with occasional scramble.
The Lion’s Head sunrise hike features a steep, screw-top route that winds around the mountain. Although the trail can be challenging, it typically takes approximately two hours to complete. Along the way, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views in all directions making the effort well worth it. In some sections, the trail becomes rocky; therefore, for stability and safety using your hands to scramble over the rocks is necessary.
Early Start: Hiking in the Dark
Our first hour hike require the use of our headlamps. Luckily this part of the trail is easy to follow albeit being a steep gravel track. The first light of twilight appears approximately 30 minutes before sunrise. By that time, we will have already completed a full loop around the base and be halfway to the summit. Therefore, the gradually brightening sky will help light our path as we continue our ascent. Â The last 40 minutes of the trail is along a steep ridge with rocky sections and ladders. As you continue ascending, the trail rises to 669 meters, leading to the summit of Lion’s Head.
Reaching the Summit at Sunrise
As soon as sunlight begins to peek over the horizon, the lighting gradually transforms. Consequently, a warm orange glow spreads across the sky, casting a beautiful hue over Table Mountain. In that moment, the landscape takes on a magical quality, marking the start of a breathtaking sunrise. Once at the top, you’re rewarded with a stunning 360-degree view, featuring Table Mountain as a majestic backdrop and the sparkling coastline stretching out below.
Now that it is fully daylight, we are finally able to see the path we have just ascended, revealing impressive rock formations such as Cape granite. Looking back, the terrain appears even more striking in the morning light. After taking in the view, we begin our descent, which typically takes around 45 minutes to reach the car park.
What to Pack and Prepare
In order to make the most of your Lion’s Head sunrise hike, it’s important to come well-prepared. To begin with, wear comfortable hiking shoes for better traction and support. Additionally, bring a windbreaker and dress in layers, since the weather can get chilly, especially before sunrise. By doing so, you’ll ensure a more enjoyable and comfortable experience.

Patrick was kind enough to go on on his self to get his car, after which he fetched me and brought me to my car.
In a nutshell: Patrick is a very nice and fit guy you enjoy being around with that knows the Cape very well. I can recommend booking him–should I be travelling to CT again, I will do so myself!
