Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Skeleton Gorge hike unique?
Skeleton Gorge is one of Table Mountain’s most diverse and scenic routes, beginning in the lush Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and then gradually winding through dense indigenous forest, across rocky streams, and past sparkling waterfalls, before finally emerging onto the mountain’s summit.
How long does the hike take?
The hike typically takes 5 to 6 hours from start to finish, depending on pace, fitness level, and time spent at viewpoints or resting.
How difficult is the hike?
Skeleton Gorge is a challenging route with a long uphill climb, sections with ladders, and sometimes slippery rocks near the streams. A good level of fitness and comfort with uneven terrain is required.
Is the hike safe?
Yes — with a qualified and experienced guide, the route is safe and highly rewarding. Your guide will assist on steeper sections and ensure the group follows the safest path.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable activewear and sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, and also remember to pack a light jacket, as the weather can change quickly and unexpectedly on the mountain.
What should I bring?
Bring at least 1.5 liters of water, snacks for energy, sunscreen, and a small backpack to keep your hands-free during ladder climbs.
Are there ladders or scrambling sections?
Yes. Skeleton Gorge includes wooden ladders and short scrambling sections to navigate waterfalls and rocky areas, adding to the adventure.
How do we get down from the mountain?
Most hikers take the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway down after exploring the summit. If the cableway is closed due to weather, we will descend via an alternative hiking route.
Can children join the hike?
This route is recommended for adventurous teens aged 14 and older who have hiking experience and good stamina.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If the weather is unsafe (heavy rain, strong winds, or poor visibility), we will reschedule your hike.

I had the pleasure to (try) the “Mini” peninsula all day tour. Patrick met me at the lower table car station at Table Mountain to start the tour. I was… read more his only guest, so we had lot’s of time to chat. Being in CT for 30 years and doing mtb for more than 15, Patrick definitely knows the ins and outs and is a very good guide.
The views and impressions, but also the inside informations on the tour were very special and even though I had to realise I would not make it back to the cable car station (I was around 250 / 1500 altitude meters short…), I still loved every meter I rode.
Patrick was kind enough to go on on his self to get his car, after which he fetched me and brought me to my car.
In a nutshell: Patrick is a very nice and fit guy you enjoy being around with that knows the Cape very well. I can recommend booking him–should I be travelling to CT again, I will do so myself!
