Lion's Head & Signal Hill Trail Run

Trail running around Lion’s Head and Signal Hill.

The trail run to Signal Hill and around Lion’s Head offers a picturesque adventure in the heart of Cape Town. The trail runs start at the lower Table Mountain parking lot, Kloof Neck parking.

Ascending Signal Hill: Views Worth the Climb

Embark on the ascent of the lower section of Lion’s Head by following the well-marked trail.  This path gently meanders through lush fynbos vegetation and gradually ascends as it skirts along the slopes of Signal Hill. Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the coastline, Robben Island, and the vibrant city of Cape Town. Eventually, after a challenging climb, you’ll arrive at the upper parking lot of Signal Hill, marking a well-earned milestone. Pause for a moment while you catch your breath and soak in the panoramic vista. Undeniably an ideal spot for some memorable photos.

Lion’s Head Contour Path: A Scenic Loop

From the upper parking lot, the trail descends towards Lion’s Head. Follow the path as it winds its way down, be careful of the occasionally steep and rocky terrain, rather take your time and be cautious. Upon reaching the base of Lion’s Head, you’ll come across the Lion’s Head Contour Path. From there, the trail leads you on a scenic journey around Lion’s Head, offering continuous views as you progress. This section of the trail features a varied mix of terrain, including occasional wooden steps that add to the adventure. As you make your way along the route, you’ll consistently be treated to breathtaking views of the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the pristine white sand beach and the majestic Twelve Apostles Mountain Range. After completing the circuit around Lion’s Head, you’ll eventually arrive back at the starting point—the Kloof Nek parking lot—bringing your journey full circle.

Trail Tips: Gear, Safety, and Hydration

Lastly, remember to bring essential trail running gear, sunscreen and appropriate clothing. As well as staying hydrated, especially during summer months while mindful of your energy levels. In contrast to the more demanding Table Mountain trail run, the Lion’s Head route offers a noticeably more approachable and user-friendly experience, requiring significantly less effort.  Most importantly, embrace the adventure and savor every step of your trail run.

Without a doubt, sunrise is the magic hour! Not only will you catch the city bathed in golden light, but you’ll also avoid the midday heat and the afternoon Cape Doctor winds. Plus, there’s something extra special about starting your day above the waking city.

Well, that depends on your route. both combined Lion’s Head and Signal Hill around 10 km. Gentle climbs and plenty of flat stretches.

Not really, but a good pair of trail running shoes is worth its weight in gold — those rocks can be sneaky. Add a water bottle, sunscreen, and a light jacket, because Cape Town weather loves to surprise you. If you’re chasing the sunrise or sunset, a headlamp is your best friend.

Mostly yes, but locals will tell you it’s always better (and more fun) with a buddy. You’ll find plenty of friendly faces on the trail, but still, let someone know your plans. Think of it as part safety, part excuse to brag about your early-morning adventure.

Sure can! Just remember: Signal Hill is a pup’s paradise with open paths, your furry friend will thank you.

Oh yes, and it’s a local favorite! unbeatable 360° views. By the time you finish, you’ll have a 10+ km loop and a heart full of Cape Town magic.
