Table Mountain Contour Trail Run
The contour Path trail run offers an exciting adventure.
With a distance of 12 kilometers, our Table Mountain trail run looks like an accessible course, but the narrow and technical terrain make it a challenging experience. The Contour Path has exposed sections, steep inclines and rocky terrain. Therefore, it is important to be cautious. The trail starts at Table Mountain lower cable car station. The ascents are straight up through a series of steps, requiring therefore a bit of effort. Once you successfully conquer the initial ascent and finally reach the Contour Path, the real fun truly begins, as the trail opens up to smoother terrain and spectacular views.
Finding Your Flow: Running the Contour Path
The path gently undulates along the front slopes of Table Mountain, and as you move with its natural flow, you can gradually find your rhythm while also warming up your muscles.
The combination of elevation consequently makes for an engaging and dynamic running experience. Above all, adjusting your effort and pacing accordingly is necessary.
Moreover, the ever-changing scenery continuously offers fresh motivation and inspiration, encouraging you to keep pushing yourself forward with every step.
Natural Beauty and Motivation Along the Route
The vegetation along the path is diverse and rich. Running amidst this natural beauty certainly adds an extra level of serenity and connection with the environment.
The duration of the run varies on your fitness level, pace and the number of stops you make. Completing a 12-kilometer route take around 3 hours. Carry enough water. In other words, stay hydrated, wear appropriate trail running shoes with good grip and bring a windbreaker.
A Trail Run for the Experienced
All in all, the Table Mountain Contour Path Trail Run demands both physical strength and solid trail running skills. Consequently, best suited for more experienced runners who are prepared for its challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions
So… what is the Table Mountain Contour Path?
Think of it as the mountain’s front-row balcony. It’s a trail that hugs the slope of Table Mountain without going all the way up, giving you epic city and ocean views without the leg-burning summit climb. You just cruise along the side of the mountain, soaking in the scenery.
How far is it, and how long will it take me?
From Kloof Nek all the way to Kirstenbosch Gardens, the route stretches for about 11 km of pure trail bliss, and along the way, you’ll likely pause often to capture the breathtaking views. Consequently, depending on how many photo stops you make (and trust me, you will make a few), the run can take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. You can also hop on or off at several points if you want a shorter adventure.
Is it beginner-friendly?
Yes! It’s one of the most forgiving trails on Table Mountain. Sure, you’ll step over rocks and climb the odd set of stairs, but you won’t be huffing up endless inclines. It’s the perfect introduction to Cape Town trail running.
What gear do I need?
A good pair of trail running shoes is your best friend here — the path can be uneven, and after rain it gets slippery. Add a bottle of water, some sunscreen, and a light jacket because Cape Town’s weather likes to keep things interesting.
When’s the best time to run it?
Early morning is magic — golden light on the mountain, cooler air, and fewer people around. Summer mornings are crisp and bright, while in winter you can get that misty, mysterious vibe before the clouds roll in.
Is it safe to run alone?
The busier sections are fine for solo runs, but locals often pair up for safety and company. Plus, it’s always more fun to share the “look at that view!” moments with a friend.
Can I mix it with other trails?
Absolutely — and that’s part of the fun! You can link it with the Pipe Track for even more coastal views, or use it as a warm-up before heading up a summit route like Platteklip Gorge or Skeleton Gorge. It’s like building your own Cape Town trail playlist.

The views and impressions, but also the inside informations on the tour were very special and even though I had to realise I would not make it back to the cable car station (I was around 250 / 1500 altitude meters short…), I still loved every meter I rode.
Patrick was kind enough to go on on his self to get his car, after which he fetched me and brought me to my car.
In a nutshell: Patrick is a very nice and fit guy you enjoy being around with that knows the Cape very well. I can recommend booking him–should I be travelling to CT again, I will do so myself!
