First Light on a Thrilling Lion’s Head Sunrise Ascent

The Lion’s Head sunrise hike features a steep, screw-top route that winds around the mountain. Although the trail can be challenging, it typically takes approximately two hours to complete. Along the way, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views in all directions making the effort well worth it. In some sections, the trail becomes rocky; therefore, using your hands to scramble over the rocks is necessary.

Our first hour hike require the use of our headlamps. Luckily this part of the trail is easy to follow albeit being a steep gravel track. The first light of twilight appears approximately 30 minutes before sunrise. By that time, we will have already completed a full loop around the base and be halfway to the summit. Therefore, the gradually brightening sky will help light our path as we continue our ascent.  The last 40 minutes of the trail is along a steep ridge with rocky sections and ladders. As you continue ascending, the trail rises to 669 meters, leading to the summit of Lion’s Head.

As soon as sunlight begins to peek over the horizon, the lighting gradually transforms. Consequently, a warm orange glow spreads across the sky, casting a beautiful hue over Table Mountain. In that moment, the landscape takes on a magical quality, marking the start of a breathtaking sunrise. Once at the top, you’re rewarded with a stunning 360-degree view, featuring Table Mountain as a majestic backdrop.

Now that it is fully daylight, we are finally able to see the path we have just ascended, revealing impressive rock formations such as Cape granite. Looking back, the terrain appears even more striking in the morning light. After taking in the view, we begin our descent, which typically takes around 45 minutes to reach the car park.

All in all, the Lion’s Head sunrise hike is an unforgettable adventure that provides a truly unique perspective on Cape Town’s natural beauty. From start to finish, it offers moments of awe and inspiration that stay with you long after the climb. By witnessing the sunrise from the summit, you’ll experience a view that perfectly captures the essence and vibrant energy of Cape Town at dawn. Keep in mind, start times vary depending on the time of sunrise, so be sure to check ahead when planning your journey.
