Table Mountain via Kasteel's Poort Hike
A Historical and Scenic Ascent
A Secluded Table Mountain ascent through History, nature, and panoramic beauty.
The path Table Mountain via Kasteels Poort was constructed to service a pipeline below the series of peaks known as the Twelve Apostles. The pipeline was built to carry water from Table Mountain’s to the Molteno Reservoir in Oranjezicht. The hike offers incredible views of Camps Bay and the deep blue Atlantic Ocean. Altogether the hike is not technical and showcases the diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity of Table Mountain. This lesser-known trail offers a more secluded therefore tranquil experience away from the crowds.
Starting Between Table Mountain and Lion’s Head
The hike starts in between Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. The trail takes a flat sweep above Camps Bay and along the twelve Apostle Mountain range.
Turning Off Toward Kasteels Poort
After a short distance, you’ll see a marked turnoff for Kasteels Poort. Until now the hike was flat and gentle but from here, the real climb begins. The path becomes steeper and winds through lush fynbos, shaded by cliffs and dotted with proteas and other endemic flora.
Dramatic Landscapes and Open Vistas
As you ascend, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. You’ll then pass towering sandstone cliffs, quiet ravines, and open ledges offering breathtaking vistas over the Atlantic Ocean. The route is less technical than India Venster, making it suitable for moderately fit hikers.
Iconic Landmarks and Final Ascent
Keep an eye out for the old cable car ruins and the diving board one Table Mountain most photographed spot. A piece of rock that juts out, offering as an awesome photo opportunity. The path takes us then through a series of valleys and a few ladders before arriving at Table Mountain top cable car station. Once you reach the summit, take a moment to savor the breathtaking views and soak in the accomplishment of conquering Table Mountain.
Safety and Preparation Tips
Without a doubt having a tourist guide is part of safety precautions as well as checking the weather conditions, appropriate clothing and a good hydration.

How long does the hike take?
The hike generally takes 4 to 5 hours to reach the summit, depending on your pace, fitness level, and time spent at viewpoints.
How difficult is the route?
Kasteelspoort is a moderate-to-challenging hike. While there’s no technical climbing, it involves a steady uphill climb and requires a reasonable fitness level.
Is the hike safe?
Yes. With a qualified guide who knows the route, conditions, and weather patterns, Kasteelspoort is a safe and enjoyable way to experience Table Mountain.
What wildlife might we see?
You may encounter baboons, antelope, ostriches, and a variety of bird species. It’s important to keep a respectful distance from animals and follow your guide’s instructions.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable hiking clothes suitable for the weather, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, a hat, and layers as coastal weather can change quickly.
What should I bring?
Bring at least 2 litres of water, snacks or a packed lunch, sunscreen, a camera, and a small backpack for essentials.

No. Kasteelspoort is a non-technical hike, making it a great choice for those who prefer steady walking over rock scrambling; however, it has 3 ladders.

What happens if the weather is bad?
If the weather is unsafe (strong winds, heavy rain, or poor visibility), we will reschedule the hike.

Patrick was kind enough to go on on his self to get his car, after which he fetched me and brought me to my car.
In a nutshell: Patrick is a very nice and fit guy you enjoy being around with that knows the Cape very well. I can recommend booking him–should I be travelling to CT again, I will do so myself!
