Form the top of Lion's Head you can cast your eyes over the city of Cape Town, Table Mountain, the beaches of Camps Bay, Clifton and the sparkling coastline. There’s no swift cable way ride to the top. The somewhat steep hike winds its way around the head until you reach the top; It involves some interesting aspects: ladders, a chain traverse of an exposed ridge and some steel handles for safety reasons. Way it is a Cape Town tradition to hike to the summit to toast the full moon as it rises over the mountains to the East and to watch the sun setting to the West.
The first official use of Lion's Head was a permanent watch station with a small signal cannon and a flag. Under British occupation a signaling station was built on Signal Hill replacing the old Dutch cannon on the top of Lion's Head. Today at 12 midday you will hear the Noon Gun as it is now called from the slopes of Signal Hill. This is the oldest tradition in Cape Town.
