The King Protea flower

South Africa's National flower is large with tall shrub and magnificent flower head. The King Protea flower are thick, leathery, somewhat spoon or paddle shaped, dark green with reddish edges and long red leaf stalk. The flower head is large, bowl shaped, creamy white centre surrounded by long, pointed pink to deep crimson spear shaped petals. If you are hiking up Table Mountain via Kasteels Poort  you can find it on the upper slopes of the mountain usually in rocky areas. Belong to the Protea family (Protea cynaroides) up to 3m in size and can be found in between January to December.
